The Cradle of the Korean Modern Medic -Review of the books related to Jejungwon -
Lee Hong-Seok

Abstract
The first modern hospital in Korea, Jejungwon, established on April 10th, 1885, was managed by the western missionaries with the support of the Chosun. It is now the 126th years in since the foundation of Jejungwon. The drama, ¡°Jejungwon¡±, was broadcasted this year, telling the story of Suh Yang Park who was one of the first modern doctors and who lived a dramatic life. Also, many books about Jejungwon rode the crest of popularity. In this paper, I tried to take the view of how the accumulated results of researches on history of Korean modern medicine got to the public. To achieve this, I considered the related recently published books by and large on a class of readers and characters of those books. Regarding professional research, interestingly, the book of Park Hyoung Woo and that of Kim Sang Tae contradict each other on the ¡°root¡± of modern medicine in Korea. Additionally, as a book for the public, there is a novel, ¡°Jejungwon¡±, by Lee Gee Won who is well-known for the original work of the drama ¡°Jejungwon¡±. There are also approximately four juvenile books or comic books published. The publishing of these various books may spark the public¡¯s interest in the history of Korean medicine, and we could take this as a foundation for researches of medical history, again.
